Binder of Women is an independent, artist-led platform for contemporary artists to directly shareand sell their work. This is a unified move to empower female artists, expand their reach, broach the topic of equality and consent in the art world, and take action to grow the number of works by female identifying artists in contemporary art collections. Working independently and alongside supportive collaborations.
The name, Binder of Women, stems from the 2012 U.S. presidential debate, where Mitt Romney, opposing Barack Obama, claimed to have “binders full of women” when discussing pay equity—a phrase that alienated women voters and became a viral meme. Playing off of this meme, Binder of Women launched in 2017 with the idea of releasing folios (a “binder”) of works on paper to expand their collector base - and grew to present shows of unique artworks.
Conceptualised in Los Angeles in 2017 by Hilary Pecis and brought to the UK in 2022 by Pia Pack.
